Sing Christmas 2007

BBC Radio Leicester
This production by Radio Leicester is an inspiration of an idea. Get a whole bunch of people into pubs all over the county and link up via radio to contribute to the jollity and solemnity of Christmas in a very community way. This was ambitious and technically challenging. Highly enjoyable. Well deserves an Exploits Award.

SILVER
Dispatches: Unholy War

Again well done Channel 4 for tackling a subject most broadcasters would have been too nervous to touch in these over-sensitive days.

GOLD
Make Me A Christian
A Wildcard Production for Channel 4
Much praise to Channel 4 for commissioning this three part series, and congratulations to Wildcard who produced it. Every church should watch this series and learn from it how to relate the Christian faith to a needy society. It was relevant, real, and totally cringe free. The ending where everyone is singing ‘Amazing Grace’ is particularly moving.

BRONZE
Celebration Series Flashback – Denver Bierman of Denver and the Mile High Orchestra
Producer: Karen Mathis
Inspiration Network International
Really well put together Big Band piece. Works nicely without a presenter or VO. Well produced and edited. Well chosen material for the feature. Makes a great stand-alone web piece and good for new media. Best of the Inspiration Network submissions in this category by a stretch.

SILVER
World Update on the Persecuted Church
Produced and Directed by Crossfire Productions for Release International
Powerful material – thought-provoking, and absorbing. Nicely cut and edited. Post production effects – translation/transitions/captioning etc gives it a good professional feel. Audio pretty well-mixed too. Awareness has to be a key aspect for a charity of this kind and this is a good use of new media to achieve this end. Pitched well at the audience. Not sure about the hand movements of the presenter but it’s a very minor point.

GOLD
Homosexuality and the Church
Producer – Catherine Powys, Writer/Presenter – Justin Brierley, Camera / Editing – Phil Maltz, Studio Audio – Steve Fanstone
A thought-provoking and informative piece. Well anchored by Justin Brierley. A good example of repackaging already broadcast material (and adding to it) in an accessible way on an issue important to the Anglican Communion. Press conference footage integrated well. The transition to mono, particularly when moving away from the +Gene Robinson interview segments looked a little too freeze-framed at times. Seemed tidier on the fade-ins when the video was moving with no audio underneath. Starting to flag a little at 12-minute mark so a little long for me but all-in-all a very good Lambeth preview.

Slipstream: Leaders in Formation
Producer – Dr Krish Kandiah & David Couchman (Focus Radio)
Evangelical Alliance
Good series, interesting chat. It’s offering guidance and a few lessons learnt through experience. Bit lengthy with nothing to punctuate the speech (Bible reading, prayer?) but pitched for leaders and as a download would, I’m sure, be helpful. The audio’s also nice and clean with no bumps and rattles which makes it easier on the ear. Good to have online stuff to back the podcasts – a Facebook group with live chat, e-letter etc. Shane Claiborne piece is very good.

HIGHLY COMMENDED
Saffron Planet
Steve Maltz
Partially what the Net’s for – jumping on the soap box and giving it some. This takes effort – especially when it’s done in your own time with a bit of good will here and there (as I suspect is the case with Saffron Planet). I could gripe about a number of little picky points like padding images so they don’t have the text hard up on their borders but that, I suspect, would be missing the point of Saffron Planet. Raw, opinionated and interesting at times. Have seen many people try this approach and some a bit more polished than this but Saffron Planet has a decent amount of content and I can see it surviving where many others have fallen. It has its place and deserves credit.

HIGHLY COMMENDED
A Country Parish
Producer/Presenter – Mary Fox, Website Producer – Mark Stewart
bbc.co.uk/staffordshire/countryparish
Certainly shows another side to Alton away from the rollercoasters and scary rides. Aptly shows the challenge of rural Anglican parish life in audio, images and web copy. The subject is, by admission in part one, ‘often mundane’ and it’s not easy to break free of this. It’s a pretty long-term and ambitious project. Good production – bells mixed under the churchwarden etc. I’d say for this to truly work as a listening experience, you almost need the eccentric, slightly nutty characters. However, Stoke’s online effort is well pitched for a local audience and is pretty interesting. Some pleasant surprises in there too like the interview with Bishop Moon Hing from Malaysia.

SILVER
Journey – The Sound of Many Waters (Podcast)
Producer – Mary Colwell, Presenter – Trevor Fry
Another good piece from Clifton – presented and packaged well with good quality audio. Excellent wide range of interesting voices - lay people and clergy. Good to hear the Catholic Church challenged on something like the environment and for the criticism to be positively received. A little long for me – 20 minutes felt about right. Full use of the Bishop Toohey audio despite it being taken on a landline. His interview was lively but heavy going by phone.

SILVER
Dan Sinclair, Sarah Julian, Neil Heath, Celia Kellett, Nigel Bell
BBC Nottingham
Good BBC local faith page. Great multimedia, nicely linked-up as you’d expect from the pretty well-resourced BBC. Loads of content and the stories are well-sourced and covered. Plenty to sink your teeth into. Good strong line of questioning in the pieces I dipped into (e.g. the potentially incongruous club scene lifestyle of trainee priest-turned-DJ Martin Stack). However, the Stack piece dipped out abruptly at the end and with talk of the guy’s music, it would’ve been nice to hear a little of his track ‘Summertime’. Few weeny technical issues in other pieces such as the interviewer in one of the Dalai Lama interviews sounding off mic. Lourdes diary interesting. The faith section is very testament-heavy but good cross-section of stories. Obviously leans on the radio content but a little more video to go with the audio would’ve rounded it off nicely. All in all, a great audio story bank here.

GOLD
Let Us Pod
Bereavement
Producer – Mary Colwell, Writer & Narrator – Peter Hobbs
Excellent piece – personal, moving and I’d say useful to others. Very honest and compelling. I wondered whether seven-minutes would be a bit too long but didn’t even check the player to see how much time had passed – always a good sign. Fittingly simple, well-written and nicely produced. Works very well as a progressive download/podcast.
